HPI Plans to Expand Jakarta International Container Terminal

According to the Jakarta Post, PT Hutchison Ports Indonesia (HPI) is planning a US$100 million worth investment targeting expansion of the Jakarta International Container Terminal (JICT) in Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta.

Stephen Ashworth, chief executive officer of HPI, a subsidiary of one of the world’s leading port investors, developers and operators, the Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH), stated that the expansion would include construction of an entry gate complex, which would be in charge of control over vehicles entering and exiting the terminal.

The plan would be implemented in cooperation with Koja Container Terminal, taking the form of a joint facility. Namely, Koja Container Terminal exceeded its designed capacity of 650,000, reaching 800,000 TEUs, the ultimate goal being 1 million TEUs.

In addition, the expansion plan would bring about increase of containers’ volume handled by JICT, rising up to 2.8 million TEUs.

Currently the Jakarta International Container Terminal is operating under a 20 years lease contract and it includes Container I and II facilities in Tanjung Priok. Over the last six years it managed to double its operation from 1.5 million TEUs to 2.3 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs).

“I’m really impressed to see the changes in the terminals, to see the facilities such as the control tower and the computer system they’ve used more intensely. In terms of the number of vessels, I see how quickly they’ve been handled. I’m really proud of the figures I see in Indonesia,” HPH’s group engineering director, Mark Jack pointed out.
