Portland gas pipeline permit

Portland Gas has obtained a green light from the UK government to construct a new pipeline to carry gas to and from its planned offshore storage site on Isle of Portland on the UK south coast.

The new 37 km (23 mile) line will connect the planned underground salt cavern storage facility on the Isle of Portland with the National Transmission System after a permit to construct the line was granted by the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform.

“This authorisation from BERR is another milestone for the Portland gas storage project,” said Andrew Hindle, chief executive of Portland Gas. And he went on: “The project on completion will be the largest gas storage facility onshore UK and will make a significant contribution to the security of energy supplies for the country.
