India: Goa Shipyard Enters Infrastructural Modernisation Project

Setting the ball rolling for creation new generation vessels, Hon’ble Raksha Mantra Shri A K Antony will formally commission the 1st and 2nd phases of Goa Shipyard’s Infrastructural Modernisation Project Ltd (GSL) on 21 May 2011 at GSL.

The Commissioning of the 1st and 2nd phases of GSL’s ambitious Infrastructural Modernisation project at a cost of Rs 400 crores (approx 89 million USD) will enhance its infrastructure by two repair berths , transfer area and Shiplift Piers in addition to the shiplift facility.

The ‘Shiplift System’ – first of its kind in Defence Shipbuilding Yards in the country, will be dedicated by the Hon’ble Raksha Mantri on the occasion. Shri A K Antony will be also lay the foundation stone for the 3rd & 4th phases of GSL’s Modernisation Project.

The commissioning of the Shiplift facility is synchronized with the Launching of the 3rd in the series of Naval Offshore Patrol Vessels indigenously designed and being built by Goa Shipyard Ltd for the Indian Navy by Smt Elizabeth Antony, wife of the Hon’ble Raksha Mantri .

It may be recalled that the foundation stone for the 1st and 2nd phases of GSL’s modernization project was laid by Honble’ Raksha Mantri Shri A K Antony at GSL premises on 21st January 2009 .

This planned modernisation programme is aimed at creating new facilities and infrastructure whilst augmenting existing facilities in order to achieve the qualitative and quantitative objectives of building and delivering quality ships at competitive cost with shorter construction periods, increased capacity, product mix and shortened delivery times.

The modernization plan at a cost of Rs.800 crores (178 million USD) aims at creating capacity in the Shipyard for the production of cutting edge technology warships. Modernisation programme once fully completed will result in a substantial augmentation of GSL’s capacity to fabricate / construct steel, aluminum and GRP hull vessels to nearly three times the present yard capacity.
