Jan De Nul, Smulders Build Gravity Based Foundations for Kriegers Flak

Jan De Nul Group and Smulders have joined forces to build two gravity based foundations (GBF) for the high voltage station of the Danish offshore wind farm Kriegers Flak. 

The foundations, weighting 10,000 tonnes and 8,000 tonnes, consist of a concrete part and a steel structure on top of it.

Jan De Nul is responsible for the design and construction of the concrete GBF, while Smulders is in charge of the design and construction of the steel shafts and decks to be placed on top.

The steel structures were constructed at Smulders’ site in Hoboken while the construction of GBFs is undertaken on top of a barge in the port of Ostend.

The steel structures have arrived in Ostend, and are expected to be placed on top of the concrete structure this week, Jan de Nul said.

By the end of December, the foundations will be finished and ready to be transported to the wind farm location in the Baltic Sea.

Jan De Nul Group will be in charge of the installation of the foundations, the ballasting and the placement of scour protection.

Kriegers Flak will consist of two parts; Kriegers Flak A, the west section, with a total capacity of 200 MW, and the east section, Kriegers Flak B, with a total capacity of 400 MW.
