Japan 2011 LNG Imports Hit 78,5 Million Tonnes

Japan’s LNG imports reached 78,532,000 mt in 2011, a rise of 12,2 percent compared to a year earlier, according to preliminary data released today by the finance ministry.

The country imported 7,171,000 mt of LNG in December, up 13.5 percent from a year before.

The country’s LNG import cost averaged $859.79/mt in December.

Japan’s monthly LNG imports have been rising steadily year on year, due to the devastating earthquake and tsunami in March 2011.

Japan is the world’s largest LNG importer.
