Japan LNG imports flat in March

Japan’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports were flat in March from the same month a year ago, but they remained above 8 million mt.

Japan imported 8.14 million mt of LNG in March, just 0.1 percent down as compared to the year before, according to the provisional data released by Japan’s Ministry of Finance.

The country paid about $3.33 billion for LNG imports last month, a rise of 6.6 percent as compared to the same month in 2016, the data shows.

Japan’s average price of spot LNG dropped to the lowest level in five months. The average price of spot LNG for delivery into Japan that was contracted in March 2017 was at $6.2 per mmBtu.

In the fiscal year spanning from April 2016 to March, Japan imported 84.74 million mt of LNG, a rise of 1.4 percent year on year, according to the Ministry’s data.

Japan paid about $30.27 billion for the imports in the 12-month period.
