Jee Completes Tidal Cable Protection Structure

Scottish Tidal Project moves one step closer with the completion of the tidal cable management and protection structure.

Jee’s cable protection and recovery solutions are helping Scotland commercialise marine energy by ensuring cables are protected and maintainable, using Jee’s concept – U-Tube, the company said.

Tidal turbines are placed in high energy tidal areas, which have the potential to cause a great deal of stress on the cables. Jee’s U-Tube system is designed to meet the cable installation, protection and retrieval requirements of tidal projects, Jee wrote in a press release.

During September 2015, the U-tube demonstration trial will take place offshore in Orkney.

Jee’s U-Tube features a pipe fixed to a J-tube which is secured to the turbine foundations at each end of the pipe. The cable is then pulled vertically into one of the J-tubes and through the pipe using a pre-installed messenger and winch line. Once the cable is pulled in, connections are made to the turbine nacelles using wet-mate connections.
