Kosmos starts more drilling off Mauritania and Senegal

Kosmos Energy started the second phase of its multi-well exploration drilling program offshore Mauritania and Senegal.

The Atwood Achiever drillship is now on location offshore Senegal in the Cayar Offshore Profond block and has started drilling operations on the first exploration well in the program targeting the Yakaar prospect (formerly referred to as Teranga West).

The Yakaar prospect is located approximately 40 kilometers west of the Teranga discovery, Kosmos Energy said on Friday.

At the end of February, Kosmos Energy completed an agreement with BP, under which the latter acquired 49.99 percent interest in Kosmos BP Senegal, a joint company holding 65 percent participating interest in the Cayar Offshore Profond and the Saint Louis Offshore Profond blocks offshore Senegal, that could underpin a development of a “world-class” LNG project.

Jointly the two companies intend to build a new LNG hub in Africa and plan to process and transport the gas from the Tortue gas find at a nearshore LNG facility. The proposed complex could be expanded in phases to accommodate future gas discoveries.
