Largest vessel to date for Wagenborg fleet

On 18 December 2013 Reggeborg was launched at the Ferus Smit shipyard in Leer, Germany. The vessel is the second in a series of three multipurpose cargo carriers; in September 2014 the third ship, Roerborg, will be launched and earlier this year Reestborg was delivered to international transport specialist Royal Wagenborg from Delfzijl, the Netherlands.

The 169.75 metre long and 20.4 metre wide cargo vessel is the largest vessel that has been built at Ferus Smit so far, but also is the largest vessel of the Wagenborg fleet. Reggeborg has a cargo capacity of 23,000 deadweight tonnage and a gross tonnage of 19,000 tons, enabling her to deliver different kind of cargos.

Because of the size of the three sister vessels the decision was made not to built the vessels at Ferus Smit’s shipyard in Westerbroek, the Netherlands, but in Leer, Germany. The channel Winschoterdiep, where Ferus Smit delivers a lot of their vessels, has several bridges, of which the opening would be to narrow for the large vessels to sail through.

Newly developed

The R-series has been provided with several green features, like a low engine power of 4,350 kW and the bulbless eco-bow, which is newly developed by Ferus Smit. In this design the bulb bow and v-shaped frame are replaced with a bow shape with sharper angles, a reduced bow flare and a declining stem line, which will provide a calmer sea keeping and less resistance. This will allow a higher speed level, and equivalent performances on various draughts. Another asset of the multipurpose cargo carrier Reggeborg is the low noise level she produces.

The cargo carrier features a higher deckhouse than usual, resulting in clear vision lines when carrying high-project deck cargo. Next to this, Reggeborg also meets the strict requirements of the Finnish-Swedish ice class 1A, being provided with a slim form and negative stem profile in order to cope with icy conditions. The delivery of the Reggeborg is scheduled for early 2014, after which she is able to transport different types of cargo for Wagenborg Shipping.
