Lithuania Interested in Norwegian LNG

Lithuania’s President Dalia Grybauskaitė held a meeting with Norway’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Espen Barth Eide. The meeting focused on bilateral relations, Nordic-Baltic cooperation, EU’s relations with Norway, economic issues, energy security, and Eastern Partnership.

The President of Lithuania has underlined that Norway is an important Nordic partner of Lithuania which is well aware of the challenges faced by our country and contributes to ensuring our energy security.

Norway helps Lithuania to ensure diversified electricity and gas supplies and competitive energy prices. Norwegian company Hoegh LNG is constructing a special vessel that will carry gas to the Klaipėda liquefied natural gas terminal. Power interconnection with Sweden, when built, will markedly step up the imports of Norwegian electricity – one of the world’s cheapest – to Lithuania,” the President said.

On launching the NordBalt power bridge in 2015, Norwegian electricity is likely to account for about 36 percent of energy imported to Lithuania via this link.

According to the President of Lithuania, since Norway is one of the world’s biggest liquefied gas suppliers Lithuania is also interested in an opportunity to import Norwegian gas to the liquefied natural gas terminal to be launched in 2014 in Klaipėda.
