Lithuania President: Croatia LNG terminal very important for Adriatic Sea region

Croatia’s decision to build an LNG terminal on the island of Krk is of great relevance to the Adriatic Sea region, President of Lithuania, Dalia Grybauskaitė said on Monday.

Dalia Grybauskaitė, who is in Croatia for an official visit, met with the newly elected Croatian President, Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović, in Zagreb.

According to a statement released on Monday by the President’s press office, Grybauskaitė shared Lithuania’s experience with Grabar-Kitarović in building an import LNG terminal.

Lithuania became an LNG importing nation last year with the arrival of Höegh LNG’s FSRU Independence, which is being used as the country’s first LNG import terminal in the port of Klaipeda.

Croatia is also planning to build an LNG import terminal on the island of Krk for domestic use and to supply gas to southern European countries.

During the meeting, Grybauskaitė highlighted that one third of the crew on the LNG FSRU Independence are Croatians, the statement said.

The Lithuania and Croatian LNG terminals have been listed by the EU as projects of strategic importance for the common energy market and energy security.
