Mega Boxship Briefly Grounds off Southampton

The 18,000 TEU containership CMA CGM Vasco De Gama was refloated after it briefly grounded while it was approaching UK’s Southampton port, Southampton Harbour Master Martin Phipps confirmed.

He said that the vessel “briefly grounded on the approach to Southampton” at 00.31 hours on August 22.

The containership was refloated without damage or further incident around 1 am and proceeded to berth at Southampton Container Terminal.

According to latest AIS data from Marine traffic, the 2015-built boxship, operated by the French shipping firm CMA CGM, is currently moored in the port of Southampton.

The 399-meter-long vessel was scheduled to continue its voyage to France’s port of Dunkerque on August 22.
