MES Bags Gas Engine Orders

Japanese shipbuilder Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding (MES) has secured an order for four gas-powered engines from Imabari Shipbuilding Co.

The two-stroke ME-GI engines will be an integral part of two liquefied natural gas carriers, MES said in a statement today.

The newbuild LNG carriers are being built by Imabari for Spanish carrier Empresa Naviera Elcano SA.

Mitsui added that it has received a separate order for the world’s first engines to burn ethane.

The said ethane-fired engines will power up three liquefied ethane gas carriers ordered by  Germany’s Hartmann Reederei.

China’s Sinopacific Shipbuilding Group is building the ethane gas carriers that are set for delivery  in 2015 and 2016.
