MSC Boxship Struck by Bunker Barge in Piraeus

A containership owned by Switzerland-based Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) was struck by a bunker barge while berthed in the Port of Piraeus, Greece, MSC confirmed to World Maritime News. 

The incident involving the 4,507 TEU MSC Brianna and the 6,400 dwt Erato occurred on August 23.

As informed, MSC Brianna’s hull sustained minor damages.

“Having concluded cargo operations the vessel is undergoing repairs and is expected to resume service on about August 26,” a spokesperson of MSC said.

The company has not disclosed whether the barge was damaged in the incident.

As of August 25, the 1996-built MSC Brianna and the 1981-built Erato remain anchored at the Port of Piraeus, the vessels’ AIS data show.

World Maritime News contacted the Port of Piraeus for more information on the incident, however, the port is yet to reply.
