Navacel Ships Out Hywind Transition Pieces

Bilbao-based Navacel has loaded out five transition pieces built for Statoil’s 30MW Hywind Scotland Pilot Park, the world’s first floating offshore wind farm.

Statoil awarded Navacel with a contract to supply five towers which will support the Siemens 6MW turbines installed on SPAR floating foundations some 25 kilometres off Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

Navacel shipped out the first tower components for the project in early March. Each tower is divided into four sections ready to be assembled straight away.

The tower sections are loaded directly from the company’s Axpe quay at the Port of Bilbao and shipped to the assembly site at NorSea Group’s Stordbase AS in Norway.

The turbine towers have a height of 83 metres with a diameter of 7.5 metres at the base and 4.2 metres at the top, where the turbines will be installed. The weight of each tower is 620 tons.

The EUR 200 million Hywind project is scheduled for commissioning in 2017.
