New Season of Gas-Fuelled Car Races Scirocco R-Cup Now Open

Opening ceremony of the new natural gas-fuelled car racing series Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup season took place on a legendary racing track Hockenheimring, Germany.

Gazprom Germania being an official partner of the cup supplies compressed natural gas (CNG) for the racing vehicles.

Lots of motorsport fans witnessed an opening ceremony and the races of DTM cars, Formula-3, Porsche Carrera Cup and, of course, the Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup.

The racing Volkswagen Scirocco has a 2-liter turbo engine rated at 235 hp and a Push-to-Pass system which allows an instant increase of the power up to 285 hp. A gas cylinder used as a fuel tank can carry 22 kg of CNG, equivalent to 35 liters of normal petrol.

Gas fuelling attracted much interest from the public. This was done with a help of a mobile gas filling station provided by GasCom company. Gas has been delivered through a complex supply chain and processed with a special technology. Nevertheless, the original stock remains Russian natural gas that is being produced on the vast territories of Siberia.

This racing season of Volkswagen R-Cup will comprise altogether 8 races on racing tracks in Germany and Austria. A show race will also take place in Moscow on July 13th.
