Nigeria: Government Approves Funds for Gurara Dam

The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved N37 billion for Gurara water irrigation scheme completion, reports allafrica.

The Gurara Water Project is an ongoing multipurpose Dam Water Project for water supply, hydropower, irrigation and other ancillary uses. The project is being fully developed by the Federal Government of Nigeria. It presently comprises a system of large dam, 75km tunnel through Kaduna and Usma basins of Kaduna State and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The dam is built on the River Gurara and is Nigeria’s largest and pioneer water transfer scheme.

Kaduna River dredging could effectively and sustainably reduce flood levels.

The current flood disaster in some states in Nigeria is lamentable for its huge human and property casualty, particularly as it was largely created by natural causes, reports the guardiannews.

Kaduna State committee for the distribution of relief materials to victims of the flood disaster held a meeting on Saturday.

At this meeting Vice President Muhammad Namadi Sambo listed the measures to be taken to reduce the flood damages.

The Government will provide N400 million grant for Kaduna State, seeds and other inputs to increase dry season farming, and also implement a new employment program for 5000 youths and women.
