Nordic Yards Takes Over Volkswerft

A symbolic act on the ship lift marked a new beginning for Volkswerft Stralsund. Berthold Brinkmann, insolvency administrator of P+S WERFTEN, handed over a big key to Nordic Yards. With that, Nordic Yards has now officially taken over Volkswerft.

Volkswerft Stralsund handed over to Nordic Yards

“Volkswerft is one of the most diverse shipyards in the Baltic Sea region, and has excellent suitability both for the construction of ships and complex offshore structures and for the overhaul and repair of civil and military ships,” said Berthold Brinkmann. “I am delighted that we have seen success in ensuring that the ship-building expertise at the tradition-rich maritime location of Stralsund is preserved and in coming up with a future-proof solution offering prospects for the people here. It was always our aim to find a renowned strategic investor and to keep the shipyard here in Stralsund.”

By the end of the year, 250 employees should be working at the shipyard. By the end of 2016, this number should have risen back to 500. All 26 trainees will be supervised by the insolvency administration so that they can complete their training with Nordic Yards.

Berthold Brinkmann: “Both shipyards of the P+S Group, Peene Werft in Wolgast and Volkswerft in Stralsund, now have a secure future. The new owners – for Peene Werft, the Lürssen Group and for Volkswerft, Nordic Yards – will make considerable investments and maintain and create a total of almost 1000 jobs.”
