Norway: Statoil Gets Green Light to Use West Phoenix Rig on Troll Field

Statoil has received consent to use the West Phoenix mobile facility for drilling and well operations on Troll.

The consent relates to permanent plugback and abandoning (P&A) of wells on the Troll Oseberg Gas Injection (TOGI) subsea facility, as well as plugback and/or drilling and completion on production licences 054 and 085 (Troll Olje), where Statoil is the operator.

The activity on TOGI relates to the wells 31/5-B-2 H, 31/5-B-3 H, 31/5-B-4 H, 31/5-B-5 H and 31/5-B-6 H.

Killing and temporary plugback of the wells, as well as pulling the X-mas tree, will be carried out by a facility in the form of light well intervention. Separate consent (link) has been granted for this activity.

The earliest estimated start-up of the remaining plugging with West Phoenix is July 2011.

The back-up plan for utilisation of the facility in the charter period will be drilling of Troll Olje in well J-22 H.

The operation has an expected duration of six to eight months.

The West Phoenix semi-submersible drilling facility (photo) is operated by North Atlantic Drilling (formerly Seadrill Management AS).

The facility is a type Moss Maritim CS50 and was built at the Samsung yard in South Korea.

West Phoenix received the Petroleum Safety Authority Norway’s (PSA’s) Acknowledgement of Compliance (AoC) in June 2008 (link).

The facility will be chartered by Statoil from Total for the planned activities on TOGI and Troll Olje.

The estimated charter period is 180 days with an option of another 45 days. West Phoenix has not previously been in operation for Statoil.
