The facility is to have an annual liquefaction capacity of 19.8 million tons, according to Novatek.

The company further said that the contract terms provide for the launch of the first train of the project in 2023.

“The team, which implemented the unique Yamal LNG project in record time and on budget, has now joined an even larger and more innovative project,” Leonid Mikhelson, Novatek’s chairman of management board, said.

The Arctic LNG 2 project envisages constructing three LNG trains at 6.6 million tons per annum each. Novatek has already entered into preliminary agreements with UK-based energy and commodity trading company Vitol and Spain’s energy company Repsol for the sale of LNG from the Arctic LNG 2 project.

In April this year, China National Oil and Gas Exploration and Development Company (CNODC), a subsidiary of China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), and China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), each acquired a 10 percent stake in the project. French oil and gas company Total also has a 10 percent stake in the project under an agreement from March 2019.
