NYK Line said that, as part of its safety campaign, it conducted a crisis-response drill based on the scenario of a serious accident occurring on the company-owned LNG carrier.

The drill was carried out in partnership with  the Maritime Bureau within Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), the 3rd Regional Coast Guard Headquarters of Japan, the Maritime Disaster Prevention Center (MDPC), and related parties.

The drill allowed the participants to review their possible response to a significant accident involving an LNG carrier and examined measures with one another.

The drill scenario included a rudder failure occurring while the LNG carrier was sailing to the north of Tokyo Bay, and the ship collided with a containership that was sailing to the south. The LNG carrier lost control as it took in water from the damaged area.

NYK coordinated the whole response drill by setting up a crisis-management headquarters, following the distress call, reporting the accident information to MLIT’s Maritime Bureau, the Japan Coast Guard, and related parties and so forth.
