Overwhelming Majority Oppose Dumping of Dredge Spoil at Great Barrier Reef

Australians are overwhelmingly opposed to the Government’s approvals for dumping of dredge spoil in the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area, revealed by a new Galaxy poll released today.

“This is a stunning result – 91 per cent of Australians are against turning our World Heritage Great Barrier Reef into a rubbish dump, with only three per cent in favour,” Australian Greens environment spokesperson Senator Larissa Waters said.

“The international community are so concerned they’ve sent UNESCO to investigate, and now on the last day of their visit, the Australian community have spoken out loud and clear – what’s it going to take for the Government to stop dredging and dumping in the Reef?

“The old parties at both state and federal levels all support the cheap and nasty option of dumping in the Great Barrier Reef, showing once more that they are completely out of step with mainstream Australians who love our Reef and want it protected.”
