Petrobras Buys First Angola LNG Cargo

Petrobras said it has purchased its first shipment of LNG on Friday from Angola. The commercial agreement was signed with Sonangol, the Angolan state company, and a shipment of 160,000 m³ of LNG, equivalent to 96 million m³ of natural gas, left the port of Soyo, Angola, on Sunday onboard the LNG carrier Sonangol Sambizanga towards Brazil.

Processing and liquefaction of natural gas for loading was done by the Angola LNG consortium in a natural gas treatment unit built to harness Angolan offshore production reserves, through a partnership between Sonangol, Chevron, BP, ENI and Total.

This is the first shipment of LNG produced by Angola LNG. The Angolan fuel must be delivered to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, where it will be regasified at Petrobras’ Terminal in Guanabara Bay and injected into the company’s gas grid to supply the Brazilian market, mainly supplying the thermoelectric plant demand.

With such a purchase, Petrobras has diversified its supplier portfolio, providing greater flexibility and reliability for the supply of natural gas in Brazil and establishes an important trading partner in African.

“This partnership with Sonangol is important to Petrobras, as it increases our range of options to purchase LNG on the international market, expanding the boundaries for long distance natural gas production and transportation, which greatly contributes to a dynamic market,” explains Petrobras’ Gas & Energy Director, Alcides Santoro.
