PHOTO: North Sea Giant Makes Pit Stop at Aibel

One of the largest subsea construction vessels the North Sea Giant has been spotted in the dock at Aibel’s yard in Haugesund.

According to Aibel, about 100 Aibel workers are engaged on the vessels’ several modification tasks.

“For instance, we are installing a new nitric oxide facility, overhauling a Voith propeller and replacing the floor in the kitchen and canteen area,” explains EVP Yard Haugesund, Bjørn Tollefsen.

The assignments on North Sea Giant should be wrapped up by the end of February.

Furthermore, the Bibby Challenge residential barge should take its place next month, while survey vessel Edda Flora has been at quay for classing.

The barge is scheduled to undergo replacement of hull steel. This assignment, according to the company, will engage around 30 employees. Bibby Challenge will stay in Haugesund throughout the year, providing housing for workers arriving to the yard to work on the Johan Sverdrup project.

In addition, Normand Subsea, an ROV support vessel, is scheduled for classing (periodic inspection) in March. Aibel also said that, later this spring, expects arrival of a ‘large’ FPSO.

“Despite a quiet market, there has been significant activity at the quay this past year. The ship assignments comprise an important part of Aibel’s activities in Haugesund and help ensure consistent staffing outside activity peaks at the yard,” says Tollefsen.
