Poland, Lithuania considering gas link

Poland is reportedly mulling a gas link with Lithuania in an attempt to further strengthen the energy security of both countries.

Polish deputy prime minister Mateusz Morawiecki on Monday said that the project is not yet at an advanced stage adding that Poland might turn to the European Union for financial support, Reuters reported.

Morawiecki said the support of the European Union is counted on as the gas link would be a cross-border project, noting that Poland, that recently received its first liquefied natural gas cargo, could provide support to Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.

During his visit to Lithuania to discuss energy issues, deputy prime minister Morawiecki added that Poland is still considering expansion of the Swinoujscie terminal to 7.5 billion cubic meters of LNG per year. The terminal on Friday received its first ever cargo of LNG for the cool-down and commissioning process.

He also revealed that Poland and Lithuania could consider joint gas purchases, strengthening the bargaining position of both countries.
