Port of Rotterdam: LNG throughput rises 91 pct

The port of Rotterdam on Friday revealed that the throughput of liquefied natural gas in the Dutch port increased sharply in 2015. 

The throughput rose 91.3 percent from 1.2 million tons in 2014 to 2.3 million tons in 2015, although, it is still considered a small segment, Port of Rotterdam said in a statement.

“LNG prices in the Far East have fallen sharply and are now comparable to those in Europe, which increases the trade and shipping volume of gas in our region,” the port said.

The port also intends to spur LNG bunkering as it is looking to support the shipping sector and companies that advocate the use of liquefied natural gas as fuel.

EUR 1.5 million has been reserved by the Port of Rotterdam Authority for the scheme under which seagoing vessels that bunker LNG in Rotterdam receive a 10 percent discount on gross seaport dues. The scheme will apply until 2020.
