Port of Turku, Neste Jacobs Looking into LNG Terminal Project

Finish technology, engineering and project management provider Neste Jacobs has inked a contract with the Port of Turku to investigate the potential and possibilities of the construction of an LNG terminal in Pansio harbor area in Turku.

The terminal would serve maritime traffic, public transport, and the local industry needs, enabling availability of low-emission and environmentally friendly LNG in the Turku area, Neste Jacobs says.

The project reviews the potential demand for liquefied natural gas in the Turku area, maritime traffic and other factors supporting the project implementation.

“This project is a recognition of Neste Jacobs’ local knowledge and continuous long-term cooperation with Port of Turku”, Jarmo Suominen, CEO of Neste Jacobs points out.

”Port of Turku considers this project to be highly important as LNG is a future trend and we want to contribute to its development in the Turku area”, Christian Ramberg, Port of Turku’s CEO, comments.

In May 2012, the port signed a letter of intent with Finish gas company Gasum on building an import terminal for liquefied natural gas in the Pansio Harbor. The area has room for terminal operations including a storage tank of at the most 30,000 cubic meters. LNG can be supplied from Pansio to the port on bunkering vessels or tank trucks.

A planning appeal regarding the planned import terminal was made to the Turku Administrative Court in 2014. However, in 2015 the court dismissed the appeals on the alteration of the city plan of the LNG terminal in Pansio.
