On 9 April 2014, the Petroleum Safety Authority Norway (PSA) carried out an audit of Statoil’s detailed engineering of offshore loading systems for the Aasta Hansteen spar platform.

The objective of the audit was to verify that the loading system for Aasta Hansteen was adequately qualified and dimensioned pursuant to applicable regulations.
The PSA said that no non-conformities were identified, but added that improvement points were identified in connection with handling of alternative solutions, verification of analyses, documentation.

The Aasta Hansten platform will be the first spar unit to be installed on the Norwegian continental shelf. Spar is a floating installation consisting of a vertical column moored to the seabed. The installation features conventional topsides with processing facilities.

The risers transporting the gas from the seabed to the platform and further to Polarled pipeline will be pure steel which will be first of its kind on the Norwegian continental shelf. The hull will be fitted with storage for condensate. The condensate will be loaded to shuttle tankers at the field.

The Aasta Hansteen field is located in the northern part of the Norwegian Sea on the Vøringplatå approximately 300km west of Bodø, Block PL218 at 1,300m water depth, and is the name given to the three independent reservoirs of Luva, Snefrid and Haklang.
