Qatargas has won an award for its industry leading safety performance on the Jetty Boil Off Gas (JBOG) project. The award was presented by His Excellency Dr. Mohammed Bin Saleh Al-Sada, Minister of Energy and Industry at Qatar Oil and Gas Industry HSE Excellence Awards ceremony held last week in Doha.

Sheikh Khalid Bin Abdulla Al-Thani, Chief Operating Officer – Engineering & Ventures received the award on behalf of Qatargas. “I see this award as a clear recognition of all the efforts that the JBOG project has undertaken to ensure flawless HSE performance. It is also a collective recognition of our ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and welfare of every person working for Qatargas. I see this also as an award for the Qatargas Leadership team who has embraced safety as their number one priority. The Jetty Boil-off Gas Recovery Project showcases our commitment to responsible environmental management in alignment with the Environmental Development pillar of the Qatar National Vision 2030.” he said.

Bashir Mirza, JBOG Project Manager adds: “It is indeed a privilege and an honour to receive this prestigious HSE award from Qatar Petroleum . Safety of our workers is the number one priority on the JBOG Recovery Project, and I am pleased to say that the entire JBOG Integrated Project Management Team, consisting of Qatargas and Fluor people, has left no stone unturned in ensuring that Everybody Goes Home Safe.”

Qatargas has several programmes in place to address environmental issues such as pollution, Greenhouse Gas emissions and global warming. The JBOG project is the largest investment of its kind in emissions reduction projects in the world with a capital investment of around one Billion Dollars and an estimated 600,000 tonnes of annual gas flaring reduction which translates to 1.6 million tonnes per annum carbon dioxide emissions reduction.

The project has not only devised high quality procedures and guidelines, but also ensured that all initiatives are fully implemented. The contractors on the project, mainly Qcon and Qatar Kentz, have provided excellent support for Qatargas’ JBOG goal of zero injury, thus helping around 3000 people at site remain incident and injury free.

Launched in 2010, the Qatar Oil & Gas Industry HSE Excellence Awards is administered by Qatar Petroleum ‘s Corporate HSE Department. Under the programme, oil and gas companies operating in the country are invited to submit their ongoing HSE programs and initiatives for consideration. An independent team of judges then evaluates all the submissions against a pre-established set of criteria. After establishing a short list, a second round of judging subsequently takes place in the form of an audiovisual presentation. The Excellence Awards primarily aims to recognize outstanding health, safety and environment (HSE) programs being implemented in Qatar’s oil & gas industry and to promote continual improvement as well as the sharing of best practices in the field of HSE.

Qatargas also participated in the exhibition held as part of the award ceremony. The Qatargas booth at the exhibition highlighted the company’s key environmental initiatives including the JBOG Project, Greenhouse Gas Management Programme, Wastewater Management Strategy and Flare Reduction Programme.
