Quantum, Golar Join Forces on Ghanaian LNG Terminal

Golar LNG and the Ghanaian subsidiary of Quantum Pacific  have teamed up on construction of a USD 500 million liquefied natural gas import terminal, according to Reuters Africa.

 The parties have signed a deal to build the terminal offshore the eastern port city of Tema. The terminal is expected to provide Volta River Authority (VRA) with the gas by mid-2016.

According to the deal, Golar LNG will be in charge of providing an offshore floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU).

Obsolete equipment and shortage of funds cause frequent energy supply breakdowns in this West African country therefore new sources of energy are extremely important.

The Tema LNG Project is endorsed by the Ghanaian President John Mahama.

“A lot of work has already been done with payments committed to parts of the Tema LNG project. We are now aiming to complete all government approvals and secure gas supply and sales agreements for a final investment decision in the last quarter of this year,” Don Ackah, Chief Executive of Quantum Power Ghana Gas said.

“The floating unit, currently being constructed by Samsung Heavy Industries in South Korea, will have the capacity to deliver at least 250 million cubic feet of LNG per day, or 1.75 million tonnes annually”, Ackah added.
