Report: Energean hires Stena Forth drillship

Greek oil company Energean Oil & Gas has reportedly hired one of Stena Drilling’s drillships last week on a term deal set to begin in 2018.

According to information provided by VesselsValue, Energean hired Stena Drilling’s Stena Forth drillship last Monday on a five-month deal.

The contract will begin on January 1, 2018, and end on May 31. The dayrate for the drillship has not been disclosed.

The Stena Forth has been available since mid-third quarter after it completed a long-term deal with Hess Corporation. Annual reports from Stena indicate that the drillship had been with Hess since 2009, the year the vessel was delivered to the company.

During its time with Hess, the drillship has mostly operated in the Gulf of Mexico. The rig had a contract with Hess until 2019, but due to a cancellation clause in the contract, the Stena Forth did not see the deal through to the end.

According to latest AIS data, the Stena Forth drillship is currently moored in the port of Las Palmas, Spain, and has been there since September 2.

As for the rig itself, the Stena Forth is a harsh environment, dynamically positioned DP Class 3 drillship capable of drilling in water depths up to 10,000 feet. It was built by Samsung Heavy Industries and delivered to Stena in 2009.

Offshore Energy Today has reached out to Stena and Energean seeking confirmation and more info.

An Energean spokesperson said: “There is a procedure in progress and we will officially inform the public when a final decision is made.”

Stena has yet to respond to our inquiry.
