Report: SWS yard launches Northern Offshore’s jack-up rig

China’s Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding (SWS) has launched a jack-up rig being built for Northern Offshore, under the order signed back in 2014.

According to Eworldship, a Chinese maritime news website, the rig – Hull No. H1419 – of the Gusto CJ50 design – hit the water on June 8.

The H1419 hull is actually the Energy Edge jack-up unit, while the H1418 – reportedly launched in October 2018 – is called the Energy Enticer. The two rigs were ordered in September 2014.

Northern Offshore last month secured long-term contracts for the two three-legged rigs with Qatar Petroleum.

Each rig has been awarded four-year firm contracts (plus options). The drilling units are expected to start work in Qatar next year, with Energy Enticer starting in April 2020 and Energy Edge in June 2020.

The rigs can operate at water depths of up to 400 feet (around 122 meters), with maximum drilling depth set at 30,000 feet (9144 meters).

Northern Offshore CEO at the time said its onsite project construction team would continue to work closely with the shipyard “to ensure the units are delivered “fit for purpose” as required by these new contracts.”
