Report: Total withdraws from offshore Oman block

French oil company Total has reportedly withdrawn from its offshore exploration block in the Sultanate of Oman.

According to Reuters, which quoted Omani energy ministry’s official, Total has decided to cease its exploration efforts in the Arab country’s waters due to disappointing results.

The company was exploring at the Block 41, around 140 km northeast of Muscat. The block covers an area of around 24.000 sq km, in water depths ranging from 30 to more than 3,000 m.

In December 2013, Total signed an Exploration and Production Sharing Agreement for Block 41 with the Government of Oman following an exploration round launched by the Sultanate in November 2012.

Offshore Energy Today has reached out to Total seeking confirmation, and an insight into the rationale behind the decision to stop offshore operations in Oman. We will update the article if we get a response.
