RS Organizes Gas Carrier Seminar

A seminar organised as part of the training programme for experts in marine gas transportation systems inspection took place at the Personnel Training Centre of Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS). At the seminar, lectures on insulation and membrane fitting of type MARKIII and No96 В cargo tanks were delivered by Mr. Remy Prioleau, head of newbuilding department at GazTransport & Technigaz (GTT).

Seventeen RS surveyors as well as experts from ОАО NOVOSHIP and ОАО Far Eastern Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Centre have received training at the Centre. On completion of theoretical training, the seminar students will go on probation to South Korea to obtain practical skills at STX Offshore & Shipbuilding and Hyundai Mipo Dockyard where gas carriers of various types are built to RS class.

The training programme is a part of the RS strategic development in the field of maritime gas transportation, which includes two main components: scientific and personnel. Scientific potential in the field of maritime gas transportation includes RS Rules for the Classification and Construction of Gas Carriers issued by the RS in 1985.

Personal training is currently of high priority; a special training course has been developed by RS. In total RS has trained 66 experts in gas carriers building and operation. The further increase in the number of highly qualified inspectors is carried out within the RS target development and preparation to the Russian LNG export projects (Sakhalin II, Vladivostok LNG and Yamal LNG projects), as well as in other projects with Russian participation, for example, Israel LNG project.

LNG carriers is one of the strategic trends in the RS activities. Since 1985, RS has been publishing Rules for the Classification and Construction of Gas Carriers. RS was one of the first in Russia to start active training of experts in marine gas transportation system inspection and is now in possession of sufficient human resources to administer any major project in this field.
