Russian and Japanese Shipbuilders in Talks About Possible Cooperation

The international two-day seminar ‘Development of Cooperation between the Russian Federation and Japan in the Field of Ship Construction and Repair’ attended by Russian and Japanese shipbuilders took place on 25 September in Vladivostok. The event was organised by Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) and Japan Ship Design Association.

The main objective posed by the organisers and the participants is an exchange of professional opinions and study of the opportunities for cooperation in the field of ship construction and repair between Russian and Japanese companies. The majority of the participants noted that whereas the completing equipment of Japanese companies like FURUNO, DAIHATSU, YANMAR, HANSHIN, MAYEKAWA and HASEGAWA is widely used both by Russian shipbuilders and worldwide, the Russian market is lacking information on specialised equipment such as fishing, dredging and other equipment stipulated by the designs of special-purpose ships as well as concerning the opportunities of cooperation with Japanese shipyards.

Mr Sergey Shishkin, Deputy Head of Business Development Division – Head of Newbuilding Department, is sure that such meetings are very useful. “Japanese experience, the quality and reputation of the equipment produced in Japan will be estimated by Russian customers at their true worth. In its turn, RS is ready to render detailed assistance to Japanese companies as its potential clients in order to ensure their successful entry into the Russian market“, he said.

Japanese equipment suppliers, shipbuilders and ship repairers (who represent such noted companies as Daihatsu Diesel, Yanmar Company, Niigata Power System, etc.) having arrived at the seminar will in the course of two days familiarise potential Russian partners with the opportunities of their enterprises and engage in business negotiations.

“We are going to present ship engines of a new type, towage equipment as well as several dozens of ship designs of various types, namely, fishing vessels, oil tankers, tugs, etc. Hopefully, business negotiations will grow into a partnership” said Mr Naomi Yoshida, General Director of Japan Ship Design Association.
