Italian oil and gas contractor, Saipem is reportedly expected to secure a contract on Novatek’s second liquefied natural gas (LNG) export project in the Russian Arctic.

Citing unnamed sources, Reuters reported on Monday that under the contract that has not been signed yet, Saipem would build gravity-based platforms to liquefy natural gas at the Arctic LNG-2 facility.

The gravity-based structures should allow Novatek to build the plant more cheaply than its first Arctic LNG project, according to the report.

Besides its $27 billion Yamal LNG project that is expected to ship its first cargo before October this year, Novatek is planning to buildĀ the second export project to be locatedĀ on the Gydan peninsula.

The Arctic LNG-2 project is expected to have the same output of 16.5 million tons of LNG per year as the Yamal project.
