Salamander Eyeing Ocean General Rig for Exploration Campaign Offshore Indonesia

Salamander Energy reveals that it has been negotiating a Letter of Intent for Diamond Offshore’s Ocean General semi-submersible rig for its drilling campaign offshore Indonesia.

The company plans to use the rig, built in 1976, to drill four prospects on its acreage in the North Kutei basin starting in 4Q 2012.

In today’s interim statement, Salamander says it has mapped approximately 20 leads and prospects in the basin. ISIS Petroleum Consultants have completed an independent assessment of the resource potential in the North Kutei basin and estimate that the four most mature prospects contain gross mean unrisked prospective resource of 676 MMboe (534 MMboe net to Salamander).

Salamander holds majority operated interests in the Bontang and SE Sangatta PSC’s. These are located in the North Kutei basin. The main Kutei basin is one of the world’s major hydrocarbon provinces, says the information on Salamander’s website.

The north of the basin has been overlooked as it was thought it lacked a sand system. The Group’s Angklung discovery made in 2010 disproved this theory and has opened up a new play, exposing the Group to multi-Tcf of gas and hundreds of millions of barrels of oil.
