Shell Extends Rig Contract with GDI (Qatar)

Shell has extended a contract with Gulf Drilling International for the Al-Khor jack-up drilling rig. Shell will use the rig for offshore drilling in Qatar’s North Field. The value and the length of the contract were not disclosed.

The new contract covers drilling activities in the Pre-Khuff interval of Block D area. Block D covers an area of 8,089 square kilometers onshore and offshore Qatar and is located close to Ras Laffan.

According to the news release on the GDI website, dated November 12, the contract was signed by Qatar Shell’s Executive Vice President, Wael Sawan and GDI’s Chief Executive Officer, Ibrahim J. Al-Othman.

The Al-Khor is a jack-up built and designed by Keppel Fels in Singapore. The rig is capable of operating in 300 ft of water with a maximum drilling depth capability of 30,000 ft.
