Shell’s Prelude FLNG nearing first cargo shipment

Shell’s Prelude floating liquefied natural gas facility off the Western Australia coast is set for the first LNG cargo shipment. 

Speaking at the company’s management day conference in London, Shell’s head of integrated gas, Maarten Wetselaar said the Prelude FLNG unit has been producing chilled fuel for over a week already, adding that the first shipment is “imminent.”

This confirms comments made by Shell’s chief financial officer, Jessica Uhl, who said that the first cargo of the chilled fuel from its Prelude floating LNG facility is expected in the second quarter of the year.

The company opened the wells in the fourth quarter last year, supplying gas to the Prelude FLNG, the largest of its kind.

Earlier in February, Shell Australia chairman Zoe Yujnovich, said the company is taking its time with the commissioning process leading up to stable production of LPG and subsequently LNG.

The FLNG facility is expected to stay moored at the Prelude gas field offshore Western Australia for 25 years. It is designed to produce 3.6 mtpa of LNG, 1.3 mtpa of condensate and 0.4 mtpa of LPG for export.
