Siemens to Deliver Gas Turbines for Combined Cycle Power Plant (USA)

Siemens Energy has received an order for the supply of two power plant units with H-class gas turbines for the Liberty combined cycle power plant in Pennsylvania.

The end customer is a subsidiary of Panda Power Funds. The overall power plant is to be erected by Gemma-Lane. The Liberty power plant will consist of two power plant units, which will be erected as single-shaft configurations, each with an H-class gas turbine as the main component.

The plant will have an electrical capacity of 829 megawatts (MW) in combined-cycle duty. Thanks to the H-class technology this plant will be one of the most modern gas-fired power plants on the East Coast of the USA. It will be able to supply up to one million homes with clean power The order volume for Siemens, including a long-term maintenance and service contract, is around USD400 million. Commissioning of the plant is scheduled for 2016. This order will mark the sale of 24 H-class gas turbines worldwide by Siemens.

The Liberty power plant is to be erected in the Asylum Township in Bradford county in the US state of Pennsylvania and will be the first power plant on the Marcellus gas field. The Liberty plant will be fired entirely by the shale gas reserves present in this field. Siemens will supply two power islands for the plant, each consisting of one SGT6-8000H gas turbine, one SST6-900 steam turbine, one water-cooled SGen-2000H generator and one heat recovery steam generator, along with the overall electrical system and the SPPA-T3000 I&C system. A long-term maintenance and service contract was also concluded for the main components. The plant is made up of two power plant units, both designed as single-shaft configurations, meaning that the gas and steam turbine are arranged on one shaft for driving the same generator. Single-shaft units offer economic advantages, thanks to lower investment costs and a high degree of flexibility during operation.

The gas turbines and generators will be fabricated at the Siemens plant in Charlotte, North Carolina. Siemens Financial Services is funding a loan of USD50 million for the Liberty power plant project.
