Simoco to Install Communications System for Gladstone LNG, Australia

Simoco Australasia said it has been awarded a new contract, in partnership with Jones Communications, to supply and install a TETRA system to Bechtel GLNG, ensuring reliable communications are maintained throughout the Santos Gladstone Liquefied Natural Gas (GLNG) project planned site expansion in Queensland, Australia.

The Santos GLNG Project is a pioneering initiative to convert coal seam natural gas (CSG) to liquefied natural gas (LNG) and is due for completion in 2015. Once converted, the LNG will be transported via a 420 kilometre underground pipeline to an LNG plant on Curtis Island, off the coastline of Gladstone, for export to global markets.

Bechtel, a world leader in the construction of LNG plants, is the Front End Engineering Design contractor for the downstream components of the project. Bechtel selected the DAMM infrastructure and Sepura terminal solution, developed by local channel partner Jones Communication in conjunction with our Queensland branch. The new TETRA system, installed in July 2012, offers a secure, reliable and efficient alternative to traditional systems, while ensuring the day-to-day operations and site management can effectively communicate throughout the site expansion and into the future.

Designed to cover a radius of around 8km from the site itself, the TETRA system will support over 500 radio users equipped with Intrinsically Safe hand-held portables required for this environment. The system has been designed to provide excellent group communications support, direct mode operation between individual radios, packet data and data transfer services. In addition, it includes fast call set-up time, which is vital in a mission critical environment such as the Santos GLNG Project.

Alan Clarke, General Manager at Simoco Australasia, says: “Securing this contract through Jones Communications underlines how important our Channel partner program is and it validates our commitment to work side by side with all of our Channel Partners to provide a solid platform for local support to key customers such as Bechtel. Our TETRA system is well proven and with the expertise of our team, the new solution will help enhance Bechtel’s communications across its operations at the Santos GLNG Project.”
