Skangass Delivers LNG to Rockwool

Rockwool’s factory in Moss has received its first deliveries of LNG from the Skangass terminal in Fredrikstad. Rockwool has chosen a more environmentally friendly energy carrier and is switching from oil to natural gas in its production process.

The change is in line with the group’s business strategy regarding sustainable production.

Rockwool produces insulation materials for buildings. Building insulation is one of the most effective ways to reduce CO2 consumption in homes and industry. According to the company’s website, their insulation helps to reduce emissions by 200 million tonnes of CO2 each year throughout the entire life cycle.

Introducing natural gas as an energy carrier in the production process contributes to a further reduction in CO2 emissions. LNG from Skangass replaces the oil that has traditionally been used to power the furnace producing mineral wool. By using natural gas instead of oil generally results in a reduction in CO2 emissions of between 20 and 25%. Meanwhile, natural gas contributes to a reduction of almost 100% in NOx and SOx emissions into the local environment.

“We are delighted that we are able to provide a more environmentally friendly solution for a customer with such a strong environmental profile,” says Gunnar Helmen, Sales Manager at Skangass. “We have a number of industrial customers who receive LNG and natural gas from our facility in Fredrikstad. Overall, these help to reduce environmental emissions not only in Østfold but also globally,” concludes Helmen.

The Rockwool factory in Moss does not have access to any pipelines that can supply the factory with natural gas. The solution is therefore to transport LNG  to the factory. From the Skangass LNG terminal in Fredrikstad, trucks transport the LNG to the tank at Rockwool’s premises. The LNG is here regasified and natural gas is then forwarded to the production process.
