Sonatrach eyeing LNG supply deals in South America

Sonatrach of Algeria is expected to continue sending LNG supplies to Asia as well as look for new customers in South America.

The company’s vice president of marketing Mohamed Rafik Demmak told Reuters that Algeria will divert its gas supplies away from Europe and that Sonatrach is looking to focus on the long-term LNG supply market.

He said that the country is reducing pipeline supplies and increasing LNG exports as demand for gas in Europe is lacking. Sonatrach supplied a fifth of Europe’s gas demand mostly to Italy, Spain and France.

Demmak added that Sonatrach is looking to investigate long-term supply opportunities in South America, especially with possible clients in Brazil and Argentina. It has also continued talks with Egypt to deliver additional cargoes to the country.
