Spain’s imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) dropped 33 percent in March as compared to the same month in the year before.

LNG imports reached 10.48 terawatt hours (TWh) in March, as compared to 15.70 TWh the year before, according to the data provided by the Spanish LNG terminal operator, Enagás.

Almost half of the March LNG imports came from Nigeria, followed by volumes from Algeria, Peru and Qatar, the Enagás data shows.

The data shows that both conventional gas demand and gas-to-power demand fell in the month under review.

The demand drop could be explained by warmer weather in Spain. The average temperature recorded during March has been 2.2ºC above that recorded during the same month in 2016, Enagás said.

Spain’s total natural gas imports reached 27.99 TWh last month, showing a decline of 6.4 percent from 29.90 TWh in March 2016.

Enagás’ Barcelona regasification plant received 4 out of the total 12 LNG cargoes imported into Spain during the last month.

The report shows that the Huelva and the Sagunto LNG import terminal received 3 cargoes each while Bilbao and Murgados took one shipment each.

Spain, the world’s largest re-exporter of LNG, did not ship any cargoes of previously imported LNG during the month of March.
