Spain’s LNG imports rise over 61 pct in December

Spain’s imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in December rose over 61 percent compared to the same month in 2015. 

According to the data provided by the Spanish LNG terminal operator, Enagás, LNG imports reached 20.2 terawatt hours (TWh) in December 2016, as compared to 12.5 TWh in the corresponding month a year ago.

The majority of imports came from Nigeria and Peru, followed by volumes from Algeria, Qatar, Angola and Norway.

Spain’s total natural gas imports reached 40 TWh, showing a 20 percent increase from 33.4 TWh in December 2015.

The cold snap that hit most of Europe did not avoid Spain as average temperature recorded during December has been 1.1ºC below that recorded during the same month in 2015.

Enagás’ Sagunto regasification plant received seven out of the total 25 LNG cargoes imported into Spain during the month under review. Enagás’ report shows that the Huelva LNG import terminal received six cargoes, four landed in Barcelona, Cartagena and Bilbao import terminals received three cargoes each while two were delivered to the Mugardos LNG terminal.

According to the report, Spain, the world’s largest re-exporter of liquefied natural gas, did not re-export any cargoes during the month of December 2016.
