Spanish Jan LNG imports down YoY

Spain’s imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) dropped 4.8 percent year-on-year due to a month-long outage at the Skikda export facility in Algeria.

LNG imports reached 14.4 terawatt hours (TWh) in January, as compared to 15.1 TWh in the corresponding month a year ago, according to the data provided by the Spanish LNG terminal operator, Enagás.

The majority of imports came from Nigeria, Peru, the United States and Qatar, followed by smaller volumes from Trinidad, Norway, Algeria and The Netherlands.

LNG Imports from Algeria dropped 89 percent year-on-year due to the mentioned outage. However, pipeline imports from Algeria rose 6.7 percent to 16.8 TWh, the report showed.

Spain’s total natural gas imports reached 35.9 TWh, showing a slight increase of 1.5 percent from 35.3 TWh in December 2015.

The cold snap that hit most of Europe did not avoid Spain as average temperature recorded during January has been 3.1ºC below that recorded during the same month in 2015.

Enagás’ Huelva regasification plant received five out of the total 17 LNG cargoes imported into Spain during the month under review.

The report shows that the Sagunto LNG import terminal received four cargoes while three landed each in Barcelona and Bilbao import terminals. The Cartagena and the Mugardos LNG terminal received one cargo each.

Spain, the world’s largest re-exporter of LNG, did not ship any cargoes of previously imported LNG during the month of January, Enagás said in the report.
