Statoil to plug Gullfaks Sør well with Songa Dee

Statoil has received consent from the Petroleum Safety Authority (PSA) Norway to use Songa Dee for well plugging at Gullfaks Sør, in the North Sea.

Statoil is the operator at Gullfaks Sør, located in block 34/10 in the northern part of the North Sea. The field has been developed using a subsea solution tied back to the Gullfaks A and C platforms. Production on the field began in October 1998.

Statoil has now received consent to use the Songa Dee semi-submersible drilling rig to plug exploration well 34/10-52 A/B permanently. The well was drilled and temporarily plugged in 2011.

The operation is planned to begin in late October and is estimated to last for 16 days.

Songa Dee is a semi-submersible drilling rig of the Mitsubishi MD-602 type, built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd in Japan in 1984.

The rig is owned and operated by Songa Management AS of Stavanger. It was issued with an Acknowledgement of Compliance (AOC) by the PSA in June 2009.

The rig was recently moored at the Invergordon facilities deep water quay Queens Dock in September 2014 for a Special Periodic Survey work, and Songa Offshore informed that the rig is expected to leave Invergordon, Scotland, on 7 November 2014.
