STX Kicks Off Construction of Messina’s New ConRo

STX Offshore & Shipbuilding held a steel cutting ceremony at its Jinhae shipyard on Oct. 23rd for Italian Shipping Company Ignazio Messina’s new ConRo vessel, the Jolly Vanadio.

The vessel, scheduled for delivery in the second half of 2014, will be 240 meter long with 45,000 tons of deadweight and ability to accommodate 2,900 containers. In addition, 37.5 meters beam will enable the vessel to develop a maximum speed of 21.5 knots.

Jolly Vanadio vessel is the third out of four ConRos that Messina has ordered from STX as a part of its $500 million development plan.

While designing the ships, special attention was paid to the environmental aspects of the vessels, that is why they will incorporate cutting edge antipollution systems, which include innovative and sophisticated Wartsila exhaust gas cleaning systems. Also, the newbuilds will feature state-of-the-art MacGregor RoRo cargo access equipment.

Four other vessels with similar particulars have already been built by Daewoo Shipbuiding & Marine Engineering Co. Ltd. for Ignazio Messina and started operating earlier this year, reports HLPFI.
