Taiwan has received a cargo from Cheniere’s Sabine Pass LNG export terminal in Louisiana, the first ever US LNG cargo produced from shale gas to reach the country.

The 138,000-cbm Cadiz Knutsen docked on Monday at the Taichung LNG terminal located in in the port of Taichung in central Taiwan, according to the marine data provider VesselsValue.

The vessel loaded a cargo at Sabine Pass and left the liquefaction facility on May 8, the data shows.

Taiwan, the world’s fifth largest LNG buyer, currently imports the chilled fuel via two regasification terminals, located in the central and southern parts of the island.

With less reliance on nuclear power and dwindling domestic natural gas resources, Taiwan is expected to boost its LNG imports in the future to drive power sector growth.
