Technolog of Germany Develops LNG Offshore Transport Vessel

Hamburg’s TECHNOLOG, as a partner of the German engineering alliance IPP, develops the first LNG-Dual-Fuel powered offshore transport vessel for JIANGSU HANTONG SHIP HEAVY INDUSTRY.

This means that the ship can be operated both with conventional fuels as well as with very environmentally friendly LNG (liquid natural gas). The corresponding contract has now been signed. Project-related co-operation agreements were made with engine manufacturer MAN Diesel & Turbo as well as with the classification society Germanischer Lloyd. The new ship design will reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by around 33 per cent compared to conventional powered new constructions.

With our support, the HANTONG Group will be able to offer a technologically first-class vessel to the world market that also meets the most stringent international regulations on environmental protection”, explains Hans-Jürgen Voigt, Managing Director of TECHNOLOG.

The LNG-Dual-Fuel powered new building is characterised not only by reduced CO2 emissions, but also by reduced nitrogen oxides (NOX) and sulphur dioxide (SOX) emissions. The scheduled delivery date for the ship is April 2014. The carrier will be operated by the shipping company owned by the HANTONG Group.

This special purpose vessel shall transport foundations and components used for the erection of offshore wind farms as well as for their maintenance. With Jade-Werke GmbH in Wilhelmshaven the HANTONG Group is currently building a separate production site for the assembly of heavy steel foundations for offshore wind farms in European waters. Hence, the intention is also to use the ship in Germany.

STREAM design concept for shipping of the future

TECHNOLOG as the technology partner supplies the ship’s design, the construction engineering as well as the LNG drive technology. Hence, TECHNOLOG is the primary representative of the German engineering alliance IPP Ingenieur Partner Pool GmbH, Hamburg. IPP developed the trend setting and ready for production container vessel “STREAM 4200 LNG” during the recent years in close co-operation with wellknown partners, such as Germanischer Lloyd, Hamburg, TGE Marine Gas Engineering GmbH, Bonn, and MAN Diesel & Turbo, Augsburg and Copenhagen. STREAM stands for Sustainable Transport, Reliable, Economic and Ambitious and can also be adapted for other types of vessels.

With STREAM, we show that the construction of environmentally friendly and economic ships is possible and feasible,” says Voigt.

With significant fuel costs savings of up to 33 per cent compared to conventional new constructions, the STREAM design as a container vessel with a capacity of 4,200 TEU (standard containers) emits up to 500,000 tons less CO2 over its entire service life, depending on the shipping route. The LNG-Dual-Fuel drive makes it possible to operate a ship with LNG completely free of sulphur emissions.

In that way the new ship design also meets the third stage of the IMO emission regulations “IMO Tier III”, which envisages a reduction of nitrogen oxides (NOX) by up to 80 per cent in the Emission Control Areas (ECAs) in 2016 compared to “IMO Tier I”, as well as an 85 per cent reduction of sulphur dioxides (SOX) in 2015. The STREAM concept was tested and approved by Germanischer Lloyd and can now get ordered from TECHNOLOG.
